Restaurant Salaam  offers fine world cuisine, beers and wines in an exotic yet family-friendly atmosphere at 21 W. Washington Street, in the heart of uptown Athens, Ohio.


We accept reservations only for parties of five or more; call 740-594-3800. We're open Monday through Friday for lunch from 11:30 until 2, and open for dinner EVERY NIGHT from 5:30-9:30.  


Our eclectic menu includes traditional and traditionally-inspired dishes from the Middle East, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, North Africa, Thailand, India and Pakistan, with a focus on fresh local foods.


Our dairy products, eggs, and much of our produce are locally raised; we bake our bread daily and prepare all our salad dressings, our falafel, and some of our desserts in-house at our family-owned restaurant.  We have lots of vegetarian and vegan dishes on the menu and specials list, and use only naturally-raised chicken and sustainably harvested seafood.  We have many gluten-free offerings as well; don't forget to ask your server for our special gluten-free menu.


There's always something at Restaurant Salaam for every budget. Our verision of Harira (a hearty vegan lentil and vegetable stew) served with our house-made bread is a great healthy meal for $5, and all of our wrap sandwiches are available at dinnertime too.  Want to splurge a little?  Try one of our 12-ounce ribeyes... a lot of folks have told us they're the best steak in Athens! Our charbroiled lamb rib chops with Turkish pepper rub, or specials like our Thai green curry with scallops and shrimp, or perhaps a grilled duck breast with spicy mango chutney, make a great celebratory dinner.


Some of our specials are "spicy hot" but most of the items on our menu will appeal to those who want more mildly-spiced dishes, or who just want to enjoy great steak or lamb kabob.

Due to the  pandemic, in order to ensure our safety and yours, we are currently offering ONLY a limited menu carryout dinner option, which is available only on Friday and Saturday nights and MUST BE PRE-ORDERED BY FRIDAY AT NOON.  Here's how to do it:


1. Make your choices from this week's menu below. 


2. Call Hilarie between 11 am and 11 pm Thursday, or between 9 am and 12 noon on Friday at 740-707-2167 to place your order.   You'll pay for your food in advance by phone with a credit or debit card or a gift certificate on file. Please don't call after noon on Friday as we'll be busy prepping in the kitchen!


3. At your chosen pickup time time (between 5:00 and 7:00) we will bring your food out in bags with your name on them and put them on a table in the rear patio area of the restaurant for an easy, contactless pickup. Come up one at a time on the patio, please, to observe safe distancing.  Please be aware that often there will be more than one bag with your name on it.  THERE IS A MAP BELOW WITH DIRECTIONS TO THE REAR OF THE RESTAURANT FOR PICKUP.


Disposable flatware and napkins will not be included in your order unless you request them when ordering.

Mark and I are working hard in the kitchen to prep your food ourselves, so if it's a few minutes late coming out of the kitchen, please be patient with us. Please don't call to say you've arrived to pick up your food... it only slows us down in the kitchen.  But do call if we've messed up your order somehow!

Other than the above, the information on this website regarding our regular menu, hours of operation, etc. is not in effect during the pandemic.  We fully intend to return to our regular business model when it is safe to do so. Thanks!

We’ve invited our friend (and former Salaam team member) Liz Florentino of Sunflower Bakery to offer some freshly baked items that you can pre-order and pick up with your Salaam food!


Persian Chickpea Butter Cookies: Hearty, bite sized cookies made with chickpea flour, local eggs and plenty of butter.  Rolled in crushed pistachios, cardamom & sugar.  Made without gluten.  10 cookies/$8.


Soft Wheat Bread A 12-oz vegan loaf, made with organic flours and olive oil   4


Lemon Balm Syrup: A customer gave the bakery a lemon balm plant last year. It's doing so well this spring, Liz wanted to find a way to share it! This is a simple syrup made with non-GMO sugar infused with fresh lemon balm and a splash of lemon juice. It is a lovely addition to iced tea, soda water or your favorite cocktail. 8 oz/$3

Salade Niçoise:
